Fall Season
Tuesday, August 08, 2017
Summer is winding down with its abundance of early sunrise and late sunset, making room for lots of activity. My husband and I have fit in golf a few times a week in spite of business increasing. I'm always telling caregivers to care for themselves; make time for things that bring them happiness and respite from caregiving. I must take my own advice to be my best for the family caregivers I meet in their homes or at my support groups. To do this, I have to plan, fix a time on my Day Timer for visits with friends, a round of golf with my husband, time with family and restful time reading. Sometimes it is not easy. As caregivers most common comment and complaint about caregiving is that they are always 'on', measuring what they say, how they say it, and regulating their responses to sometimes very challenging behaviors, so am I when I coach. After 18+ years of coaching I sometimes think I have it down to a science, then, I neglect time for me and find my willingness to give more wanes.
Autumn is a busy time too but somehow the shorter days leave more down time to unwind. It is my favorite season (in spite of golf time being less available!)
The bottom line of advice: make time for you. A friend who gives caregivers time off while she cares for their family member calls her service Time For Me Too. Do it!
